To keep unused sealant fresh for as long as possible, store it in a cool, dry place and seal the nozzle tightly after each use.

Here are the best practices:

  • Seal the nozzle immediately after use to prevent air and moisture from entering.
  • Cover the tip with the original cap, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or a screw that fits the nozzle opening.
  • Store the cartridge upright with the nozzle facing up to reduce the chance of leaks.
  • Keep it in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ideally, store it between 5°C and 25°C (41°F–77°F).
  • Avoid freezing or prolonged exposure to high heat, as both can shorten the sealant’s shelf life.
  • Write the opening date on the cartridge so you can track how long it has been stored.

How long does opened sealant last?

  • Silicone sealant: Typically 1–3 months if properly sealed.
  • Polyurethane sealant: Usually 1–2 months after opening.
  • Acrylic or latex caulk: Often 2–6 months, depending on storage conditions.

Before using stored sealant again, squeeze out a small amount first. If the sealant is hard, lumpy, separated, or doesn’t flow smoothly, it has likely cured inside the cartridge and should be replaced.
